Brachiobasilic Fistula for Vascular Access.
J Surg Jan ;23-24:28-30.

The recent expansion of renal replacement therapy programs has been associated with an increase in the number and complexity of patients requiring permanent vascular access. Patients who need long-term hemodialysis often require multiple operations to maintain their vascular access. The options for secondary and tertiary access procedures may become increasingly limited. Prosthetic conduits are commonly used in different cases but are associated with high incidence of complications. The brachial artery transposed basilic vein arteriovenous fistula has been used in preference to prosthetic graft on 26 occasions. There were no technical failures and 23 fistulas matured. No major infective complication occurred. This procedure should be considered before resorting to a prosthetic graft for vascular access.
