Aetiology of aerobic vaginitis.
Ann Pak Inst Med Sci Jan ;4(1):13-7.

Objective: To determine the pattern of aerobic microbial flora in the vaginal infections. Place and Duration of Study: This study was conducted at the Microbiology department of Fauji Foundation Hospital, Rawalpindi over a period of two years (April 2004 –March 2006). Materials and Methods: One thousands nine hundred and twenty three high vaginal swabs , from patients aged 3 months-70 years both from indoor and outdoor were collected , cultured and identified. Results: Frequency of aerobic vaginal infection was 47%, about two-third (76%) of these were from out patients. Single isolates were obtained in 91.0% and mixed isolates in 9.0% of the cases. 8.6% were two and 0.3 % were three mixed isolates. Gram-positive cocci were most prevalent organisms (66%), followed by Gram-negative rods (31%), Candida spp (3%) and Gram -negative cocci (0.1%). Staphylococcus aureus was the most prevalent organism (64.7%), followed by Escherichia coli (19.0%), Enterococci (10.2%), Klebsiella pneumoniae (9.9%), Streptococcus pyogenes (9.6%) , Pseudomonas aeruginosa (7.4%) and Candida spp (4.1%). About 60.5% of the Staphylococcus aureus were mixed with Gram –negative bacilli and candida, about 14.8% of the Gram –negative bacilli were mixed with each other, whereas 13.6%of the Enterococci were obtained in a mixed growth with Gram-negative bacilli and candida. While 4.9% of Candida was combined with Pseudomonas and S. pyogenes which is also combined with Gram–negative bacilli (3.7%) and two percent of the Coagulase –Staphylococci were found mixed with E.coli. Conclusions: The population studies are needed to establish the role of resident microbial flora in the causation of disease and pathogenesis. Furthermore the preventive measures are very important and the efforts regarding the techniques of proper genital hygiene and toilet techniques should be discussed.
