Seizures in children with fever presenting in accident and emergency department of Children’s Hospital, Lahore.

Objectives: To determine the final diagnosis in patients who presented with fever and seizures in accident and emergency department of The Children’s hospital and Institute of Child Health, Lahore. Setting: This study was conducted in Accident and Emergency Department of The Children’s hospital and Institute of Child Health, Lahore, which is a tertiary care Hospital. Duration: One month, July, 2010 Study Design: Descriptive study. Patients and Methods: Retrospective review of charts of patients was done. All patients who presented in Accident and Emergency Department of The Children’s Hospital and Institute of Child Health, Lahore, with fever and seizures were included. Data was recorded on a predesigned proforma. Investigations done were hemoglobin, total leucocyte count, differential count, blood sugar level , serum calcium, phosphate and alkaline phosphatase. CSF (cerebro-spinal-fluid) examination was done in all patients to diagnose CNS (central nervous system) infection. Results: 19252 patients visited the Accident and Emergency Department of Hospital. 444 Patients were included in the study. 285 were diagnosed as febrile seizures. 44 patients had bacterial meningitis. 60, 15 and 12 children had metabolic seizures, encephalitis and epilepsy respectively. Cerebral palsy and developmental delay was present in 8 and 14 patients each. 6 patients were diagnosed as cases of tuberculous meningitis. Conclusion: CSF examination should be done in all patients who present with seizures and fever so that even a single case of bacterial meningitis is not be missed.
