Sulfadoxine. Pyrimethamine and Chloroqnine Combination Prophylaxis in Tropical Splenomegaly Syndrome.

135 cases of Tropical Splenomegaly syndrome. 79 females and 56 males, aged 13 to 58 years, seen over a period of three years from Nov`93 to Nov`96 as outdoor and hospitalized patients at Peoples Medical College Hospital Nawabshah were studied. The spectrum of clinical presentation, haematological picture and other investigations were carried out. In doubtful cases, bone marrow aspiration and liver biopsy was performed to exclude other similarly presenting condition. e.g. lymphoma and leukemia. Tablet Sulfadoxine, Pyrimethamine two and Tablet Chloroquine two were given as malaria prophylaxis on weekly basis with folic acid suppliment. Patients reviewed monthly for sufficient period of time. e.g. 4 to 27 months, average 9 months and in 128 patients there was a good response in terms of spleenic size and haemoglobin levels.
