Med Channel Jan ;4(2):29-32.

A study of60patients with retention of urine due to prostatic enlargement and treated by catheter free trial is presented. Only 3 (5%) patients were symptom free after removal of catheter. 54(90%) patients required catheterization with 24-48 hours. 3(5%) patients required recatheterization 2 weeks after initial symptoms free period and 57(95%) of all these patient ultimately required transvesical prostatectomy. Incidence of carcinoma was 1(1.66%). Incidence of infected urine was 20(33.3%) while 40(66.6%) had sterile urine. It was concluded from the study that patients having acute retention of urine in prostatic age group except due to use of multiple drug treatment (anticholinergic etc), all other require transvasical prostetectomy. So removal of catheter is unnecessary exercise as some sort of surgical intervention is required to relieve bladder outlet obstruction.
