Azithromycin in the treatment of Paediatric Infections.

The clinical efficacy, safety and toleration of a once daily, 3 - day course of azithromycin was evaluated in paediatric patients between the ages of 6 months to 12 years, suffering from upper respiratory tract infections, lower respiratory tract infections, or skin & soft tissue infections. A total number of 61 patients were enrolled, out of which 48 were evaluable. Among the evaluated patients with upper respiratory tract infections, there were 11 patients with tonsillitis, 6 with pharyngitis, 2 with tonsillitis and pharyngitis and 4 patients with otitis media. Seventeen patients were suffering from pneumonia, two had bronchopneumonia, 5 patients had boils while one patient was suffering from tonsillitis with boils. The clinical evaluation at the end of the study showed that 47 (97.9%) of 48 patients were cured whereas one patient (2.1 Yo) was evaluated as failure. Similarly on bacteriological evaluation, eradication was noted in 47 (97.7%) of 48 patients and 1 (2.1 1) had persistence of the baseline organism. No adverse event was noted in the study patients.
