Management of Penetrating colonic injuries.

A stud of 75 patientsnts sustaining penetrating injuries of colon from September 1994 to September 1996 is presented. The patients were managed in one of the surgical units of Mayo Hospital Lahore. Eighty nine percent were male and 11% female. Sixty nine percent belonged 3rd decade of life. Eighty sustained gunshot wounds and 16% had stab wound and 16. Seventy six reached hospital within three hours 80% were operated within three hours after reaching the hospital. Eighty four percent were stable at the time of admission and 87% had other associated injuries. In 13% primary repair was done. In 24% injured colon was exteriorized and 44% had colostomy. Transverse and pelvic colon were mostly injured. Twenty had respiratory complications and 20% had wound infection. The mortality was 14%.
