Port site hernia in laparoscopic cholecystectomy.

Objective: To find out the frequency of port site hernia in laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Material and Methods: This study was conducted in the department of General surgery Hayatabad Medical Complex, Peshawar from January 2007 to December 2008. Patients who had previous upper abdominal surgery and morbid obesity were excluded from the study. Results: A total of 113 patients, 100 female and 13 male, with an age range of 16-59 years (mean 37 years ±10 SD) were included. Epigastric port site was used for gall bladder extraction. Port site hernia occurred in 1 (0.88%) of the patients and port site infection in 15 (13.27%). In the majority of patients, 92(81.42%), the duration of surgery was 60-90 minutes. Conclusion: Port site hernia is a rare but serious complication of laparoscopic cholecystectomy. It can be minimized by taking care while removing the trocars, and completely evacuating the pneumoperitonium.
