Perineal problems in female patients.

Background: Anal diseases account for a large number of general practitioner, general surgical and coloproctological referrals and consultations. Methods: A descriptive study conducted to find out the pattern of perineal diseases in females presenting in a public hospital. Results: In a total of 100 patients, hemorrhoids (n=45) was found to be the most common of the anorectal conditions. Mean hospital stay was one day in case of benign anorectal diseases and 7 days in case of malignant conditions. Majority (80%) were married. Benign lesions were more common in younger age group. 70% took treatment from hakims and homoeopaths before presenting to hospital. Presentation to gynaecologist was recorded in 30% Conclusion: In females benign perineal lesions are common and most of the women present late.
