Glycaemic index of common Pakistani breakfast (Paratha & Omelette) in noninsulin dependent diabetic patients.
Pak J Pathol Jan ;7(4):44-8.

This study was carried out to evaluate the glycaemic index (GI) of the commonest Pakistani breakfast i.e. Paratha Omelette (Meal) in patients with non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM). Seven volunteers with NIDDM received meal containing 75 g of carbohydrates. The glycaemic response of meal was indexed against the 75 g glucose load. GI was calculated on 3 hours observations. The GI of Paratha Omelette was 51.8. It produced 57% increment at peak level, whereas peak plasma glucose concentration in response to 75 g glucose was 100%. The percentage increase in blood glucose concentration of meal was significantly (p < 0.01) lower than glucose. These results suggest that paratha Omelette is relatively safer (with regard to lower GI) and may help in minimizing blood glucose variations in diabetic patients. Before detailed advice can be given long term studies are suggested.
