The value of rigid proctosigmoidoscopy in patients with bleeding per rectum.

Background: To describe the proctosigmoidoscopy findings in patients presenting with bleeding per rectum Methods: A descriptive study; All clinically stable adult patients with bleeding per rectum were included. Digital rectal examination followed by proctoscopy was performed, in left lateral position. Anorectal mucosa was examined for any probable pathology and biopsy was obtained where deemed appropriate Results: Majority of the patients were male (68%). Age range was 12 – 70 years. Haemorrhoids was the commonest (51.67%), followed by malignancy (11.67%) and inflammatory bowel disease (8.3%) Conclusion: Proctosigmoidoscopy is an effective and safe investigation for rectal bleeding having high diagnostic yield.
