Comparison of small incision cataract surgery with extra capsular cataract extraction.
J Rawal Med Coll Jan ;14(2):84-6.

Background: Small incision cataract surgery (SICS) is an alternative to phacoemulsification which ensures faster visual rehabilitation. Methods: In this interventional study, 100 cataract patients were divided into two groups. Fifty underwent extra capsular cataract extraction (ECCE) and 50 underwent small incision cataract surgery (SICS). The patients were followed up at 1st postoperative day and at 1st and 6th week after surgery and their visual acuity recorded. Results: At 6th week follow there was significant difference in the number of patients (43.33%) with vision of 6/18 or better who underwent SICS with PC IOL as compared to number of patients (35.16%) who underwent ECCE with PC IOL. No significant difference was noted in full corrected visual outcome at 6th week follow up between SICS with PC IOL (84.44%) and ECCE with PC IOL (83.51%). The posterior capsule rent was the commonest complication Conclusion: SICS and ECCE are both safe and effective techniques for the treatment of cataract. The requirement of instruction for ECCE and SICS is same, but SICS gives better uncorrected vision.
