Scrofulous swelling of the breast: tuberculous mastitis.

Background: To present the experience and to increase awareness about tuberculosis of breast . Methods: In this observational , cross sectional study, 28 female patients with breast masses were evaluated for Tuberculous Mastitis Results: Tuberculous mastitis was seen in 2.08% of patients with surgically treated mammary disease. All the patients were females of reproductive age group, with mean age of 40 years. Nine were lactating at the time of presentation. The chronic discharging sinus with or without underlying lump was the main presenting feature. 16 patients had active or previous evidence of extra mammary tuberculosis. The final diagnosis was based on demonstration of histological findings. Mastectomy was performed in one patient due to extensive breast destruction. Majority of the patients responded well to anti - tuberculous treatment. Conclusion: Tuberculous mastitis is a rare entity. A high index of suspicion is the cornerstone for diagnosis. Conservative surgery and anti tuberculous drugs seem to be adequate treatment.
