J Rawal Med Coll Jan ;13(1):16-8.

Background: To determine the distribution of Deep Venous Thrombosis (DVT)on the surgical floor and to stratify its etiological factors. Methods: This descriptive study was conducted over a period of five years; between June 2004 and May 2009 in the two surgical units of Holy Family Hospital, Rawalpindi. One hundred and thirteen patients presenting with DVT during this time period were managed on the surgical floor. Data based on history was recorded and a thorough clinical examination done which was followed by extensive investigations to diagnose DVT. Results: The mean age of presentation was 38 years with a male to female ratio of 1:1.2. Pregnancy and puerperium resulted in 40% cases, 18% were due to idiopathic causes, 27% due to immobility and 5% due to malignancy respectively. Five percent were due to congenital factor deficiencies and another 5% were diagnosed in malignancy patients. Conclusions: Females during pregnancy, immobile patients either due to age, travelling, illnesses and malignancy are the main group of patients who require close monitoring and a high index of suspicion for the diagnosis of DVT.
