Disseminated intravascular coagulation in acute lymphoblastic leukaemia.
Pak J Pathol Jan ;8(4):4-7.

Forty consecutive patients of newly diagnosed acute lymphoblastic leukaemia who had no other known cause for DIC were studied. None of the patients full filled the criteria laid down for diagnosis of DIC. Six out of 40 patients had raised (> 20 Egg/ml) levels of FDPs in serum and two of them also had prolonged PT (> 3 sec). All of these patients were of significantly (p < 0.05) younger age group and had significantly (p < 0.005) higher TLC. Raised FDPs could have been an early sign of DIC or result of primary fibrinogenolysis. The differentiation could not be made as specific tests like test for DD dinners which can differentiate between FDPs arising from fibrinogen and fibrin were not included in the screening methods.
