Bronchoscopic biopsy in the diagnosis of respiratory disorders.

Transbronchial biopsy is an important diagnostic tool in respiratory disorders. In Pakistan this procedure is done mainly to diagnose malignant lesions. In this study the relative frequency of various respiratory disorders and concordance of histological diagnosis with clinical diagnosis was studied. This study included 228 patients during the period of 1990-1992 whose transbronchial biopsy was submitted to the department of Histopathology, Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, Rawalpindi. Out of 102 clinically suspected cases of malignancy, the histological examination revealed evidence of malignancy in 65(64%) cases. The most commonly diagnosed malignant neoplasm was squamous cell carcinoma (88 cases), followed by small cell carcinoma (22), and adenocarcinoma (8). The other histological diagnoses included; chronic non-specific inflammation (13), chronic granulomatous inflammation (141, acute inflammation (9), squamous metaplasia (1) and normal mucosa (70).
