Hypomagnesaemia: A risk factor in diabetic retinopathy.
Pak J Pathol Jan ;9(2):5-7.

Magnesium levels were measured in 85 diabetic patients with diabetic retinopathy. Plasma magnesium decreased (p < 0.02) and urinary magnesium increased (p < 0.05) significantly as compared to controls. This tendency was the most significant in a group of poorly controlled diabetics, whose fasting plasma glucose was above 250 mg/dl. Reduced levels of magnesium in plasma and in erythrocytes were found to be more pronounced in group of patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy than in those with no retinopathy or with background retinopathy.
