Pak J Pathol Jan ;9(4):14-7.

For better understanding of demographics of breast cancer in Pakistani women of this part of Sindh, a five year prospective study was conducted at Department of Pathology, Chandka Medical College Larkana, a major referral centre in the region. In the study grandpara were more commonly affected (38.1%) than the nullipara (11.56%). Most of the patients (81.74%) were in third to fifth decades of their lives with peak age in the latter. Mean age was 47.83 years. Sizes of tumours ranged from 1.5 to 15 cm, with median size of 6.0 cm. Only 5.59% of tumours were upto the size of 2 cm where as 44.76% were larger than 5 cm. The most common histological type was invasive ductal carcinoma diagnosed in 89.22% of cases. Second in order was equal number of medullary and undifferentiated carcinomas (2.61% each). One (0.37%) case of NHL was also detected. Specimens of axillary lymph nodes were received in 182 cases, of which 135 (74.0%) were positive for metastatic tumour. When compared to other studies, our tumours were more or less similar to those reported from other parts of Pakistan and from a couple of other Asian countries, but when compared to West our tumours were more commonly found in younger age group, multipara were more often affected than nullipara and at the time of diagnosis the disease was in more advanced stage associated with larger sizes of the tumours and more frequent involvement of axillary lymph nodes.
