Strain characterization of the local isolates of leishmania from cutaneous Leishmaniasis using monoclonal antibodies.
Pak J Pathol Jan ;9(4):18-9.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis is endemic in Pakistan. Various clinical presentations are seen, which may be due to different strains of the parasite. Identification of the parasite species therefore becomes important. Several methods are available including use of monoclonal antibodies. Leishmanial isolates were recovered from 10 patients from Baluchistan. These were labelled with a panel of monoclonal antibodies against different species. 99% of isolates were strongly positive for L. tropica. Out of these 45°/a showed cross positively with L. major also. The results conclude that the prevalent Leishmania species in this study, was L. tropica.
