Gestational Diabetes and Pregnancy outcome: Experience at Shaikh Zayed Hospital.

Out of 1550, patients delivered between 1.11.1992 and 1.11.1993 at Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Shaikh Zayed Hospital, Lahore, twenty-six patients (1.68%) were diagnosed as case of gestational diabetesAll these patients were followed regularly at Antenatal Clinic. Blood sugar level was controlled either by diet or by diet and insulin. Hospitalization was done for adjustment of dose of insulin and for management of complications.Fetal well being was assessed by ultrasound, kick count and by non-stress test. Time and mode of delivery was decided at 36 week of gestation. 18 patients delivered between 37-40 weeks. Intra-partum maternal blood sugar level was monitored and fetal monitoring was done by external cardiotocography. Hyperbilirubinemia was the most common neonatal complication.
