Severe hemolysis and renal failure in a patient with hepatitis E.
Pak Paed J Jan ;36(2):107-9.

Acute hepatitis E is commonly seen in countries with hot climate, poor sanitation and unhygienic water supplies. Anemia is one of the complications of acute viral hepatitis. The present study reports a patient with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency having hepatitis E infection leading to severe hemolysis and acute renal failure. We emphasize that in patients with acute viral hepatitis E presenting with jaundice and severe hemolytic anemia, G6PD deficiency should be ruled out and measures be taken to prevent renal failure.
