A Clinico-Pathological Study of Ovarian Cancer.

Data on 126 female patients with ovarian cancer was reviewed retrospectively. The frequency of ovarian cancer increased with age and peaked in the fourth and fifth decade of life, The mean age of the patients was 39.5 years and median age was 45 years. About a quarter of the patients (23%) were nullipara and an equal number (26.18%) had given birth to less than three children Majority of the patients (57.1%) belonged to poor socioeconomic group.The ovarian cancer formed 4.8% of all female malignancies. It ranked as the fourth most common malignancy of the females after cancer of the breast (31.30%), uterine cancer i.e. cervix and the body of the uterus (10.87%) and oral cavity (5.37%). Epithelial tumours were most common (73.52%) and 80% of the patients had huge tumour residuum.Abdominal pain was the commonest presenting complaint (59%) to be followed by abdominal mass / distension (37%) and menstrual irregularity (16.66%). More than half of the patients (56.33%) were having their symptoms for six months to 24 months. 62% of the patients presented with the advanced stage of the disease (Stage III & IV).Laparotomy and other major surgical procedures were performed in 85.71% of the patients. Chemotherapy was given to 99 patients (78.71%). A variety of combinations of cytotoxic agents was used. CP (Cyclophosphamide and cisplatinum) proved to be the best combination. Radiation therapy was given to 25 patients: 9 patients of Stage II, 12 of Stage III and 4 of Stage IV patients.
