Role of Ultrasonography in blunt abdominal injury.
Mother & Child Jan ;37(1):27-31.

Ultrasound imaging is a common method of diagnosing intra-abdominal injuries. To evaluate clinically suspected intra-abdominal injuries by ultrasonography, this study was done in the Department of Radio-diagnosis, Sandman (Provincial) Hospital, Quetta, between 1995-97. During the study period, 123 patients were examined. Out of them, 113 patients were having parenchymal injuries. Surgical explorations were carried out in 30 of these patients. In 27 patients (90%) the ultrasound findings were consistent with the findings at surgery. Ultrasonography was also used to follow up these cases. It is concluded from this study that abdominal ultrasonography is a rapid, thoroughly reliable, cost efficient and non-invasive modality in primary evaluation and follow-up of blunt abdominal trauma. It is also useful as an initial rapid screening procedure in blunt abdominal injuries for surgeon decision making during resuscitation.
