Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) - Diagnosis and Management in Fertility Deprivation.

This retrospective study was carried out at Women Clinic and fertility advisory center, Islamabad from Jan. 1997 to May 1999 on 52 women having polycystic ovary syndrome with fertility deprivation. The diagnosis and management of such cases has been analysed. The prevalance of PCOS in this study was found 20.7%. 75% cases presented with primary fertility problem. Hirsutism was found in 84.6% cases. Another 75% cases had oligo-amenorrhea and 86.5% of women had body mass index (BMI) of more than 25 Kg/sqm. High LH:FSH ratio was found in 75% cases and anovulatory cycles in 63.7%. A classification of PCOS has been presented to categorize these women into various groups depending on the severity of the condition. The conception rate of these cases has been compared with non PCO women (control group). The conception rate of PCO group was found to be 45%. Various clinical and laboratory features of the PCO cases who conceived have been analysed. In the end, protocol for the management of the patients with PCO and fertility deprivation has been devised to facilitate the understanding of this problem and it may serve as a guideline for proper management of such cases.
