Histological markers of Teratogenisity Induced by Diazinon in Mice embryos.
Biomedica Jan ;12(1):11-5.

An organophosphorous insecticide Diazinon was given to pregnant mice in the period of organogenesis (7th day) in doses of 5, 50, 100, 250 and 500 microgram/gram body weight (Groups A to E). Embryos were recovered on 14th day of gestation. Serial sections of 5 microgram thickness were made and histological examination of brain, spinal cord, eye, ear, nose, oral region and heart of embryos was carried out. Embryos recovered from control, vehicle control and group A mothers (given 5 microgram/gram body weight Diazinon) showed a normal state of development of these regions. Groups B and C embryos showed many features indicating a primitive state of development. Groups D and E showed malformations of almost all regions, particularly the highest dose treated embryos, in which development got arrested at quite an early stage. It is concluded that Diazinon is highly teratogenic to mammalian embryos, in a dose related manner.
