Surgical treatment of Thyrotoxicosis.

In a prospective study, 260 patients of thyroid diseases were treated in a surgical unit of Services Hospital, Lahore from June 1988 to May 1992. Out of these 260 cases, 50 patients were of thyrotoxicosis with prevalence of 19.2% of these 50 cases 16 (32%) were of Grave`s disease, 26 (52%) were of toxic multinodular goiter and 8 (16%) were of toxic adenoma. 42 (84%) patients underwent subtotal thyroidectomy. 6 (12%) patients had lobectomy and 2 (4%) underwent Isthemectomy. In all those patients who underwent subtotal thyroidectomy the remnant tissue was estimated to be 36 grams on each side. Each patient was followed up for one year for functional results None of our cases developed permanent hypoparathyroidism. Eight (16%) patients had recurrent hyperthyroidism. Four patients (8%) had hypothyroidism. There was no recurrent laryngeal nerve injury, and none of our patients developed thyroid crisis.
