Gastrointestinal stromal tumors: a retrospective analysis at Hamdard University Hospital, Karachi.

Background: Gastrointestinal stromal tumors(GIST) are rare tumors of gastrointestinal tract with variable patient distribution and clinical characteristics. Objective: Th e objective of our study is to observe the demographic and clinical characteristics of GIST in our clinical sett ing. Patients and methods: It was a Retrospective analysis of records of patients who were admitted and managed over 10 years from 2001 to 2011 at Hamdard university hospital. Results: Total 10 patients were included in study; male to female ratio of 1:2.3. Mean age was 51 years (range 35-65 years). Most common presentation was abdominal pain 60% followed by abdominal mass, vomiting, anemia and weight loss. Most common site of involvement was small bowel in 60% of cases. Conclusion: GIST are rare entities with variable clinical presentation but favorable prognosis if diagnosed early, High degree of suspicion is required on part of clinician to make a timely diagnosis and early management.
