Normal Value of Echocardiographic measurements in healthy individuals of Pakistan.
Biomedica Jan ;12(2):64-7.

In order to develop a set of population norms, echocardiographic data from healthy normal adults, 114 males and 36 females (age ranging from 15 to 50 years) were pooled and analyzed according to the recommendation of American Society of Echocardiography. All the subjects were physically active and had no evidence of hypertension, diabetes or cardiac disease. Measurements were made of systolic and diastolic dimensions and volume of left ventricle, right ventricle cavity size, aortic and left atrial size, mitral and aortic valve area and thickness of interventricular septum and left ventricular posterior wall. From these, values of ejection fraction, fractional shortening and cardiac output were derived. The study reported these values to be in general agreement with those reported in western people. Sex differences were not found significant. Almost all the parameters except ejection fraction and fractional shortening varied depending upon body surface area. We conclude that body surface area adjustment should be done when comparing individual results to normal standards. No work has been done to set echocardiographic normals in Pakistan, it is hoped that this will become the standard here.

The sample size of this study is quite small and is not calculated properly. This has made the study worthless.
