Khyber Med Uni Med J Jan ;4(4):147-8.

Poliomyelitis is an infectious disease, epidemic and endemic throughout the world. It is caused by one of three types of an ultra-microscopic virus namely Wild Polio Virus type 1,2 and 3 (WPV1, WPV2 and WPV3). Poliomyelitis is a crippling disease which causes permanent disability with no cure. The economic results of Poliomyelitis are devastating. The only cure is to prevent the disease by vaccinating children. In case of absence of vaccination activities, the chances of introduction of Poliovirus increases resulting in outbreak and epidemic. Each epidemic leaves its residue of paralyzed patients, and unlike most other diseases, these patients usually remain disabled throughout their lives, creating economical burden not only on national economy but also at global level.
