A Comparison of the morbidity amongst Patients admitted with 01 and Non-O1 Vibrio Cholera infection.
Infect Dis J Jan ;10(1):23-6.

This study compares the severity of non-O1 V .cholera (0139) infection during a 1993 94 epidemic in Karachi, Pakistan, with that of an endemic 0 1 V. cholera (Ogawa) strain. Of the 398 culture confirmed cases studied, 247 patients (62%) had 01 V.cholera infection, while 151 (38%) had non-O1 isolated. Non-O1 V.cholera infected patients were older in age, had a greater number of stools, and were more likely to be hypothermic (p 0.05 by (2 test for all). Isolation of non-O1 V.cholera was independently associated with acute renal failure (p 0.05). 01 V.cholera isolates were resistant to tetracyclines, while non-01 V. cholera isolates were resistant to erythromycin. Our results indicate that diarrheal disease in Pakistan associated with non-O1 V.cholera, is of greater clinical severity compared to 01 V. cholera.
