Clinical Spectrum of Patients with Oesophageal, Gastric and Colonic Carcinomas in Rawalpindi Islamabad Region.

Background: A retrospective study to see the clinical spectrum of oesophageal, gastric and colonic carcinomas in local population. Methods: The data of 56 patients with oesophageal, gastric and colonic carcinomas admitted in Holy Family Hospital, General Hospital, and District Headquarters Hospital, Rawalpindi and those who visited some private consultant clinics from January 2001 to December 2001 was collected by filling in the proforma. Results: 36%, were suffering from oesophageal carcinomas, 7%, were suffering from gastric carcinomas and 57%, were suffering from colonic carcinomas. In oesophageal carcinomas the major group was of males 16/20 (80%). In gastric carcinomas, males were 3/4 (75%). In colonic carcinomas males were 20/32 (62%). 28.57% of total patients presented in emergency department. 71.42% came in out patients department. 25% patients with gastric carcinomas had a history of vomiting. 25% cases of colonic carcinomas had a history of hemorrhoids. Patients with oesophageal, gastric and colonic carcinomas came to the hospital after an average period of 03, 02 and 06 months respectively after appearance of symptoms. Average time taken to reach final diagnosis was 05 months, 45 days and 35 days respectively after first attendance at hospital. Conclusion: We concluded that the major G.I malignancy in our study was colonic carcinoma. The patients presented late for treatment and there was remarkable delay in final diagnosis.
