Sero-Prevalence of Liver Disease in Diabetes Mellitus.

Background: To define the frequency of hepatitis B & C viruses in diabetic patients with chronic liver disease. Method: 75 patients with chronic liver disease and diabetes were studied. The hepatitis B & C serology was done in all patients Age, sex, type of diabetes and duration of both illnesses were recorded and descriptive statistics were calculated. Results: Male:Female ratio was 2:1. Mean age 50 years. Age range 30-70 years HBV was 10%, HCV was 72%. Dual serology 6%. Viral markers for HCV and HBV were negative in 12%. Type I DM 22%, Type II DM 78%. 70% had Diabetes Mellitus (DM) before chronic liver disease was diagnosed. 12% had DM after the diagnosis of chronic liver disease. Conclusion: HCV prevalence is more among chronic liver disease patients with diabetes mellitus.
