Awareness of contact lens indications and care.

Background: To assess the awareness of indications and care of contact lens wear in medical students Methods: In this cross sectional descriptive study medical students (n= 71) were enquired about the indications of usage, knowledge about clinical assessment and storage of different aspects of contact lens wear recorded. Results: Seven students used contact lenses but irregularly. Majority of students (67.9%) knew that contact lenses were used to correct refractive errors but 83 % did not know about other indications. Majority (90%) knew about the importance of eye examination before and during contact lens usage. They also knew that lens should only be prescribed by certified eye care provider. Majority (71.75%) were aware of proper lens care (storage, disinfection) and handling of contact lens. Conclusion: Majority were aware of the care and handling of contact lenses. A significant number was not aware of important indications of contact lenses.
