Assessment of "tuberculosis preventive knowledge" in persons taking care of tb-patients.

Background: To assess TB preventive knowledge of the attendants of TB patients. Methods: In this descriptive study 170 attendants of TB patients, at three public sector hospitals in Rawalpindi district, selected by convenient sampling were assessed through a hybrid questionnaire Results: Majority were male (65.3%), literate (63%) and of low income (33.6%) group. Knowledge about cause (20.58%),ways of spread(35.29%) and of protective measures (28.23%) was inadequate. Females were less knowledgeable (20%) Among literate group adequate knowledge was associated with 10> class education (p<0.02). Subjects interviewed at TB sanitorium possessed relatively adequate knowledge (47%). Conclusions: Knowledge about tuberculosis is inadequate in our society .
