J Coll Physicians Surg Pak Jan ;11(5):294-6.

Objective: To evaluate the demographic aspects of diabetic (DM) patients for better appreciation of the disease. Design: An observational prospective study of outdoor patients. Place and Duration: Jinnah Hospital, Lahore, 2 years from January 1, 1996 to December 31, 1997. Subject and Methods: In all 3275 diabetic patients registered in Diabetic Clinic of the hospital were studied for different variables of the disease like age, sex, obesity, family history and duration of illness. All the patients were grouped, on the basis of their weight into obese and non-obese. Both the groups were further divided into sub-groups to compare and see statistical significance. Results: Females were more, 2047 (62.5%) vs 1228 (37.5%). Mean age was 48.23 +/- 15.47 years with maximum number in age group 41-50 years (male 29.9%, female 40.9%). Family history of DM was present in 63.2%, more in females (65.4% vs 59.7%). The incidence significantly increased with age and obesity (p<0.0001). Obesity was observed in 72.6% with preponderance in females (80.7% vs 59%) of increasing age (p<0.0001), 16.6% patients had DM of >10 years duration that was significantly low in females of advancing age (p<0.0001). Conclusion: Diabetes mellitus was more common in females, obese, middle age and patients with family history. Duration was usually 1-10 years. Longer duration is associated with reduced survival.
