Manual vacuum aspiration: a safe and effective alternative for the surgical management of early pregnancy loss.

Objective: To assess the efficacy of Manual vacuum aspiration (MVA) under local anaesthesia in the management of first trimester pregnancy loss and to assess the safety of procedure and rate of complications. Methods: Prospective descriptive cross sectional study, was carried out at Chiniot General Hospital form 1st June 2012 to 31st May 2013. Uterine evacuation was carried out in 128 women with a diagnosis of first trimester miscarriage using MVA under local anaesthesia. Efficacy, safety, and rate of complication were recorded. Results: Efficacy of procedure was 97.7%. Incomplete uterine evacuation was seen in 3 patients. There were no uterine perforations. Minor complication of infection and blood loss were easily treated. Conclusion: Surgical evacuation of uterus using MVA under local anaesthesia is safe, effective and should be considered to avoid prolonged hospital stay.
