Surgical Reconstruction of Pediatric Pressure Sores: Long Term Outcome.
Pak Paed J Jan ;38(4):249-51.

The long term outcome after surgical repair of pressure sore in adult population has been well studied with a reported recurrence rate of 25 to 80 percent. Despite the improvement in technique of surgical closure and rehabilitation the high recurrence rate has led to many question to investigators. Very little work has been done on the outcome of surgical repair in pediatric patients. A prospective analysis of all patients who underwent surgical reconstruction of grade III and IV pressure sores at The Children’s hospital Lahore from Feb 2007 to Feb 2013 is presented. During the 6 years period 15 patients with 20 sore with the mean age of 7 year, ranging from 2.5 to 14 year were treated. Follow up was obtained for 10 patients with 13 pressure sores. Mean follow up was 2 years ranging from 6 months to 5 years. Overall pressure sore recurrence is 13 %. Lower recurrence rate in pediatric patients signifies that surgical reconstruction in children can be successful and provide long term skin integrity.
