Indications and complications for implant removal in femoral fractures.

Objective : Objectice of this study was to determine the indications & complications ofimplant removal in femoral fractures. Study Design: Descriptive Case Study Place and Duration of Study: Department of Orthopedics Jinnah Post Graduate Medical Centre Mathod: Duration of Study was 9 Months from November 2009 to august 2010. It was a descriptive case series study. 200 patients were included in this study who under went fixation of femoral fracture. Average age of patient was 36.26 years. Out of 200 patients 94% were male and 6 % were female. All Patients were operated under spinal anesthesia. Implants from femur removed that were previously placed for the fracture. Patients were followed for 3 months & outcome was assessed. Results: The mean + SD age of patients was 39.87 + 14.81 years. Majority of them suffered from non-penetrating injuries (53.3%). The overall complication rate was 60% including (26.7%) wound infection, (20%) neurological deficits, and (13.3%) limb deformity. Conclusion: Implant removal in femoral fracture is a therapeutic procedure, but it should be removed after fracture union when there is strong indication for implant removal. Patient must be followed after plate removal to prevent the refracture and wound should be properly managed.
