Prevelance of vitamin-d deficiency in patients presenting with musculoskeletal manifestations in medical opd of CMH lahore.

Objective: To determine prevalence of vitamin-D deficiency in patient presenting with musculoskeletal manifestations in medical out patient department of CMH Lahore. Place and Duration of Study: Medical OPD of CMH Lahore from 1st May 2011 to 31st Jan 2012 were randomly selected as subjects for the study after their consent. Study Design: Observational study Subject and Methods: : 307 patients with persistent and non specific musculoskeletal symptoms with or without associated disease/s coming to medical OPD,were randomly selected as subjects for the study after their consent. Patients of both sexes aged between 10 80 years from all socio-ethnic groups were included in the study. 25-Hydroxyvitamin-D levels of all the subjects were done from renowned laboratories of Lahore and reports were analyzed statistically. Pregnant/ lactating mothers and patients with renal failure/ cirrhosis were not included in the study. Results: 99 % subjects were found to have low serum levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin-D; 30.93% were having severe deficiency of vitamin-D, 53.42 % moderate deficiency while 14.65 % subjects were having insufficient vitamin-D in their sera. Females were having more Hypovitaminosis D; male to female ratio was 3: 7. Conclusion: Patients with persistent nonspecific musculoskeletal symptoms, especially females, are at high risk for the consequences of Hypovitaminosis D. Therefore physicians should be aware of the fact and routinely check 25(OH)D in such patients for consideration of supplementation or increased dietary intake.
