J Pak Orthop Assoc Jan ;23(1):19-23.

Objective: To assess the short term functional outcome of open reduction and internal fixation of unstable ankle fractures Place and Duration of study: Department of Orthopaedics, Liaquat National Hospital, Karachi, from May 2007 to May 2008. Study Design: Case series Subject and methods: Thirty in-patients with unstable closed ankle fractures managed by open reduction and internal fixation. These patients were assessed post operatively at three and six months by American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society clinical score (AOFASS) and by other ankle functions (like squatting, kneeling and sitting cross leg). The data was analyzed by SPSS version 10.0. Results: Mean AOFAS score was 84.4± 5.68 at six months. There was a significant increase in the AOFAS score at six months (P-value = <0.0001). Younger patients (age =45) showed better recovery (P-value = <0.0001). Patients with RTA showed better recovery as compared to patients with history of fall (P-value = 0.043). There was no significant difference among other subgroups. Conclusion: The functional outcome of open reduction and internal fixation of unstable ankle fractures were good at six months.
