J Pak Orthop Assoc Jan ;22(2):119-23.

Objective: To determine the functional outcome of locked intramedullary nailing in patients with diaphyseal femur fracture. Study Design: Case Series. Place and Duration of study: Orthopaedic department, Liaquat National Hospital Karachi between February to August 2009. Subject and methods: Skeletally mature patients with diaphyseal femur fracture were enrolled. The fracture was fixed with locked intramedullary nail and postoperatively patients were followed at various intervals. Final outcome was observed at the end of 24th week in terms of infection, range of knee motion and union. Results: The Mean age of the patients was found to be 34.22 ± 15.83 years. Male to female ratio was 5.4:1. According to Gustilo Anderson classification, 4(12.5%) patients were type II and 5(15.6%) were of type III. While 13(41%) patients were of comminuted fractures and 19(59%) were of linear fractures. At the end of 24th week 30(93.8%) patients had knee range of movement from 0-1350 degree and 2(6.3%) patients had knee range of motion from 0-125o degrees. Radiological and clinical union was achieved in 31(96.9%) patients and clinical union was achieved in 1(3.1%) patient. Overall results were good. Conclusion: This study revealed that locked interamedullary nail is a modality of choice in patients with diaphyseal femur fracture.
