Early period after musculoskeletal trauma:patient experience in rural Sindh.

Objective: To analyze the patients experience, and to determine the status of availability and adequacy of on site Medical help and transportation services for the injured, in the early period after musculoskeletal trauma in rural Sindh. Study Design: A cross sectional survey. Place and Duration of Study: Liaquat University Hospital Hyderabad /Jamshoro. Patients and Methods: A questionnaire was designed with focus on the availability and adequacy of onspot help and patients transportation services in the early period after musculoskeletal trauma in rural sindh. Patients with musculoskeletal trauma and admitted at orthopedic and trauma surgery unit I & II were randomly selected and included in the study.The questionnaire was presented to patient and questions were read out and answers were recorded. The duration of study was six months. Results: Data of 92 patients were analyzed. 88.04 % were male, 45.65 % were Laborers, 14.13% were farmers. 29.3 % were injured in motorcycle related accidents, 22.8% in falls, 16.3 % were pedestrian hit by vehicle. No patient received first aid at the site of accident. Ambulance was available for only 19.56% of patients. Remaining were transported by other vehicles. Most of the patients reached the medical facility within 20 minutes after injury. Patients with fractures were 89.1%. Conclusion: In the rural Sindh facilities for transportation of road traffic accidents victim are inadequate. Ambulance service is not available to majority of patients. Majority of Injured are transported to the nearest hospital on public transport. The facility of providing first aid at the site of accident is inadequate. The current inadequate emergency medical assistance system needs to be upgraded.
