Interlocked intramedullary nailing in open femoral shaft fracture.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to assess the results of Interlocking intramedullary nailing in open femoral shaft fracture and incidence of infection. STUDY DESIGN: This is a prospective study. PLACE AND DURATION OF STUDY: Conducted in Orthopaedic Unit 1 Civil Hospital Karachi from January 2004 to December 2005. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 55 patients were included in this series. Patients were admitted through Emergency and Accident department and few cases were also admitted through OPD. After initial emergency and appropriate management, patients were shifted in emergency operation theatre for through wound debridement. Internal fixation with ILN was done once wound was found healthy. RESULTS: 39 were males and 16 were females. Out of 55 fractures 33 were due to road traffic accidents, 22 due to gunshot injury. Fracture patterns were transverse in 17 cases oblique in 11 spirals 3 and comminuted fracture were 24. Fracture comminution were graded according to Winquist Hansen classification and open fracture according Gustilo classification. Out of 55 fracture 44 healed with in 6 months period and 7 fractures healed between 6 to 9 months and 4 fractures healed after 9 months. CONCLUSION: In present study it is concluded that interlocked intramedullary nailing is good option in the management of open fracture shaft femur.
