Frequency and risk factors for deep vein thrombosis after orthopaedic surgery.

OBJECTIVE: This study was performed to determine the frequency and risk factors for deep vein thrombosis after orthopaedic surgery of and around hip and knee. STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive (case series) PLACE AND DURATION OF STUDY: Department of Orthopaedics & Radiology Ghurki Trust Teaching Hospital Lahore in collaboration with department of medicine CMH Lahore. One year from December 2008 to November 2009. SUBJECT AND METHODS: 150 patients of either sex aged > 40 who were admitted through A & E department and OPD. They were operated on and around hip and knee. All were examined clinically for DVT preoperatively. Color Doppler was done to rule out DVT in doubtful cases. All patients were subjected to color Doppler ultrasonography on 4th to 7th post-operative day. In patients were positive report, risk factors were identified. RESULTS: DVT was found in 12 patients out of 150 patients (8%). The risk factors found in these patients were multiple trauma, immobility of more than 4 days, surgical time of more than 2 hours, ischemic heart disease and hypertension. Patients and poor in 02 (4%) case. CONCLUSION: Post-operative DVT in orthopaedics patients has a lower frequency and it can be lowered further if risk factors are identified and addressed properly.
