Critical Evaluation of Naegele's Rule.
Pak J Obstet Gynaecol Jan ;12(1,2):40-4.

This study was undertaken to evaluate critically, the importance, usefulness and clinical application of Naegele's rule. A retrospective study was carried out over a period of one year from January 1998 to December 1998, on a total of 500 cases which were registered at the Unit-I Lady Willingdon Hospital, Lahore. The cases were followed from the day of admission to their duty of delivery. Their expected date of delivery was calculated in a precise manner and it was compared with their actual date of delivery. The percentages of patients who delivered on their expected date of delivery was calculated and a comparison was done with those who did not deliver on their expected date of delivery, rather some days before or after. Out of the 500 cases 4.6% cases (i.e. 23) delivered on the calculated expected date of delivery by Naegele's rule of calculating expected date of delivery has limited practical significance and it is not the definite date on which the delivery is always accomplished, rather it has been proved to be practically insignificant in its importance and clinical application.

Naegle's formula for calculating the date of delivery has definite plcae in obstetrics as patients are very curious to know. Besides it is the estimated date and not definitive date as it is called EDD.
