Changing Scenario in Hepatic Trauma.

A two-year prospective study (from January 1999 to December 2001) regarding presentation and management of hepatic trauma was carried out in North Surgical Ward of Mayo Hospital Lahore. Total number of seventy nine patients was included. Mode of injury was penetrating trauma (fifty-nine cases), and blunt trauma (twenty cases). Mean age of patients was thirty years, 77% of which were male. Seventeen patients (21.5%) presented with grade I injury, 35.4% grade II, 22.7% grade III, 15.1% grade IV, and 5.06 % with grade V injury. Sixty patients had associated injuries to other organs. The study showed an improvement in survival rate in cases of hepatic trauma in recent years. Overall morbidity was 61% and mortality 6.3%.
