Infantile Hypertrophic Pyloric Stenosis: Experience in a General Surgical Unit.

Eight infants with clinical features of infantile hypertrophic pyloric stenosis were referred to general surgical unit of Rawalpindi General Hospital, Rawalpindi between December 1999 and January 2001 by the paediatrics department of the hospital. Diagnosis was established with the help of classical history of projectile non-bilious vomiting and a palpable olive tumor. Results: Out of 8 patients, 5 had palpable tumor. Symptoms started at the age of 3 weeks in 4 and 2nd and 4th week in the other two. Preoperative preparaton took 24-48 hours in 5 patients. Conclusion: Inspite of advanced investigative techniques the diagnosis of Infantile Hypertrophic Pyloric Stenosis remains clinical with palpable tumor in the background of persistent bile free vomiting.
