Patt ern of Oral malignancies at tertiary care hospitals.

Objective: To know the common etiological factors , the sub-sites in the oral cavity usually involved in malignant lesions and also to determine the prevalent age & gender which usually aff ected by the malignancies of the oral cavity. Study design: A retrospective study. Place: It is a multicentric study carried out at Fatima hospital Baqai Medical University, Civil hospital Karachi and Sir Syed Girls Medical & Dental College karachi. Material & Methods: Th is study was conducted in 1256 patients having malignant lesions in the oral cavity who were admitt ed in the ENT department Baqai Medical University Fatima hospital Karachi , ENT department Civil hospital Karachi and Sir Syed Girls Medical & Dental College Karachi between 1st March 2004 to 31st December 2012. Results: Out of 1256 cases of oral malignancies 63.8% of patients were between 41 to 60 years of age , 73.4% were male. Buccal mucosa & oral tongue were the commonest sites, tobacco , paan & betel nut were the most commont etiological factorsin 70% cases and histopathologically 96.6% were squamous cell carcinoma Conclusions: Habits of tobacco , paan , nuswar & betel nut chewing found to be the common causative agents, mostly the aff ected victums were between the fourth to sixth decades and seen thrice more common in males .
