Pak J Surg Jan ;30(3):241-4.

Background: We conducted this study to determine the incidence of recurrent appendicitis in patients presenting in emergency with signs and symptoms consistent with acute appendicitis. Methods: Collection of data from our database allowed us to conduct a retrospective study of 386 patients who underwent appendectomy between August 2012 and June 2014 in the Surgical Unit of Khyber Teaching Hospital Peshawar. Results: Of the 388 total patients, 28(7.2%) had signs and symptoms consistent with recurrent appendicitis. Th e majority of these patients 18(64.3%) had at least one prior episode of the symptoms, 6(21.4%) had two episodes and 4(14.3%) had three prior episodes. Only 7(25%) of these patients sought medical treatment. Th e majority of patients; 21(75%) were admitt ed only once, 3(10.7%) were admitt ed twice and 4(14.3%) were admitt ed three times. Conclusion: Th e present study indicates that recurrent appendicitis as a cause of recurrent right lower quadrant pain is a valid subset of cases presenting with these symptoms and affects 7.2% of patients with acute appendicitis.
