The prevalence of urinary incontinence in pregnancy.

Objective: To determine prevalence of urinary incontinence (UI) in pregnant women visiting Sind Govt. Qatar Hospital, Orangi Town, Karachi. Design: Population-based cross-sectional study. Setting: Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Sind Govt Qatar Hospital, Orangi Town, Karachi. Population and sample: 300 healthy pregnant women in third trimester of pregnancy visiting antenatal out patient department at Sind Govt Qatar Hospital Orangi Town, Karachi during a period from March 2011 till September 2011. Methods: Interviews were conducted with 300 healty pregnant women in third trimester of pregnancy i.e. at 28 weeks of gestation or more according to their LMP (last menstrual period) or first trimester ultrasound and information recorded in preformed proforma. Women with pre pregnancy incontinence or renal disorder, diabetes mellitus or with diagnosed gestational diabetes were excluded from this study. Main outcome measures: Prevalence of UI as ascertained from interviews.. Results: Prevalence rates of UI at third trimester of gestation were 45%. Conclusions: A prevalence of 45% of UI was found in pregnant population.
